Reduce Kitchen Clutter with One Simple Step

Reduce Kitchen Clutter with One Simple Step

My kitchen windowsill is a veritable breeding ground for clutter: vases, potted herbs in various stages of death, and the ever-present soap bottles, sponge and kitchen rag behind the sink. It's this latter category that does my head in, making even a neat kitchen look messy.

Or course, many of us have the best of intentions to keep this stuff out of sight, underneath the sink, when not in use. In my experience this never lasts long; hand soap and cloths for quick clean-ups need to be instantly accessable. More permanent options like integrated soap dispensers are great, but they're not practical for renters, and only take care of one item of clutter (the soap bottle), after all.

Nope, the only real option is to corral it all somehow, cut back on the number of products where you can, and make the remaining ones pretty. Here are a few products and ideas on how to instantly make this area of your home look and function better, without having to invest much time or effort.

  1. My favorite caddy (as seen in my sister's kitchen, above) is from Joseph Joseph. It's got a draining tray, room for soap and a sponge, and even a hanging bar, so that cloth doesn't have to be draped over the faucet anymore.
  2. The company also does a in-sink version, which is ideal for sinks located in islands, and rooms where counter space is at a premium.
  3. I also like this soap dispenser from Umbra, which has integrated storage for your sponge or brush.
  4. Of course you don't need any special products to adopt this habit; you can also just use an attractive tray to corral cleaning items, as in this photo from Martha Stewart.
  5. Think vertically, as well. Storage baskets can be hung on any available wall or cupboard return, as seen in this photo from Good Housekeeping.

How do you deal with all that necessary kitchen sink clutter?
