Galentine's Day Gifts for Your Girlfriends

Galentine's Day Gifts for Your Girlfriends

Of all the joy NBC's hit show Parks and Recreation has brought us over the years, the concept of Galentine's Day might just be my favorite. After all, whether you're coupled up or attached, there's no reason to limit the lovefest that is mid-February to romance alone. Got a girlfriend (or ten) you want to celebrate with a gift this year? Here are five ideas.

What's Galentine's Day? Oh, it's only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas. — Leslie Knope

1. Something homemade.

Preferably involving dark chocolate. The Kitchn is always a great source for edible gift ideas: I'm loving the idea of these chocolate chip shortbread cookies, but a jar of homemade preserves is also a safe bet.

2. A favorite book.

Whether it's a romance, a thriller, something funny or non-fiction, make your choice something slightly obscure that your friend won't have read. I've gifted so many copies of Maggie O'Farrell's After You'd Gone over the years that I should probably start buying them in bulk. Don't forget to write a note on the cover page— reading them is the best part of receiving a book!

3. The gift of music.

When was the last time you made someone a mixed tape? Or burnt a CD? Curating a selection of songs and physically handing it to someone is guaranteed to elicit a big smile, and bonus points for a homemade album cover. But you needn't go to all that work: an online playlist works just as well. Rookie Mag has a fun Galentines-themed one (which I'm listening to as I type).

4. Candles.

Nobody dislikes candles. Actually, scratch that: nobody in possession of a soul and the sense of sight hates candles. Whether fragranced or just pretty to look at (best to err on the side of unfragranced unless you know your friend likes scent), fancy candles are what I think of as a Good Standard Gift. The travel sizes from Diptyque are always a safe bet, though you can find them at all price points.

5. An invitation.

If all else fails, have a party. I'm hosting a bunch of single friends for dinner this year on the 14th, and I can't wait to celebrate my friendships with all of the talking (and all of the wine). Because your time, not to mention good food and good conversation, is the best gift you can give anyone.

*Necessary feminist disclaimer: obviously any of these ideas are appropriate for any human person, regardless of gender! Go forth and gift in the spirit of equality.
